Have you travelled the extent of Southeast Asia and have been dreaming lately about European shores? I must admit, Europe has my heart, but a trip there can really put a gaping hole in your wallet.

So when we stumbled onto Hua Hin, we couldn’t believe our eyes when we realised the vast similarities she holds to the picturesque seaside town of Santorini in Greece~

Life on this hilly island is relaxed and filled with gorgeous Greek architecture, seaside cafes and culturally loved activities such as fishing villages and art spaces. Much to our delight, Hua Hin proved to be a great comparison and lived highly up to our Santorini expectations.

From it’s Greek Taverna to Santorini replica villas, and even a theme-park made to mirror the streets of the Greek island – you’ll find yourself slipping into a Grecian dream, and the next best thing to a Santorini vacay!

PS: You can pick up your local SIM card, organise airport transfers from Don Mueang or Suvarnabhumi airport, private city transfers, private car with driver, luggage services, etc all with the help and convenience of our friends over at Klook.

Adventures made Simple – Klook

When travelling to places that are a bit smaller, it’s often easiest to get yourself a private tour guide. Thankfully, we’ve found that Klook has some awesome packages and deals that make travelling from Bangkok to Hua Hin that much smoother.

It’s always a question of which transport mode is most convenient while being cost effective at the same time.

We’ve personally tried and tested Klook’s private chartered car with driver, and we can testify to it lifting that extra bit of stress off your shoulders.

It was also great having a personal driver to help with directions, as well as suggest awesome activities to do and places to see!

And if you’re super excited to get to know Hua Hin and it’s surrounding areas, Klook also offer awesome activities (with great prices, we’ve double checked 😉).

1. Eat so typically Greek this could be in Santorini itself – Greek Taverna

Growing up I had the pleasure of indulging in a lot of Greek food (my aunt married a Greek so I have a Greek uncle, plus the extended friends and family) and I’ve always LOVED the food.

If you’ve never eaten at a traditional Greek taverna, this is a close enough second to being in Santorini itself that you’re going to get, all the way out in Thailand.

It’s authentic, and truly feels like you’re sitting in the afternoon heat of the island and ocean breeze, waiting for a delicious array of greek delights! (Nothing beats a great Mezze after a day at the beach).

Grapes hanging from the ceiling (love it), and everything is of course, decked out in whites, blues and woods (the colours of Greece, it is the colour of their flag after all).

Photo Via Nokwheet

Enjoy all the usual taverna favourites; Tzatziki (90 Baht), Dolmades (150 Baht), Melenzano, Greek Salad (180 Baht) – you’re going to leave feeling all Greeked up and your tummy oh-so-satisfied!

2. Spend a few hours strolling cobbled streets, blue and white Greek style “villas” and boutique shops that’ll make you forget you’re in Thailand – Santorini Park

One of the beauties of Europe (in my personal opinion) is they boast some of the most beautiful architecture in the world. These can still be seen within each city today, from histories and decades ago.

So naturally, walking the streets of any city, especially one like Santorini, is filled with photo opportunities, cute cafes and all sorts of discoveries. Luckily for you over here in Thailand you can experience some of its most beloved features!

Photo Via Tithakresna, Armiradelrosario, Bi.hu_

This super cute theme park was made to replicate the streets of Santorini down to the cobbled streets, arrangement of blue and white buildings and street side shops. The result? A stunning amalgamation of art, quirky shopping with local and international brands, entertainment and lovely cafes.

Photo Via Sylvialie, Astriddiandraa, Wandiwpj

Spend the day browsing the boutique shops, and if you aren’t interested in shopping, go ahead and indulge your inner foodie.

There are many rides and attractions throughout the park as well. Make sure to check out the amusement park highlights: the Ferris wheel, carousel, water park, swings, and haunted house.

Colourful umbrellas are embedded in building walls, and fluorescent budding flowers draping off trees, to name a few. Around every corner, there is something quirky and beautiful awaiting you.

Where to stay for the perfect Santorini picturesque vacay?

These will make you feel like you’re being transported straight to the island, I kid you not. You may have to pinch yourself when you see where you’re going to lay your head at night. Enjoy darlings! ❤️

3. Sorry, could you pinch me, am I actually in Santorini?! – Resort de Paskani

Um, no, you’re not dreaming, and yes, you ARE still in Thailand, I promise, even though it may not look like it…So, wanna spend the next few days in this Santorini paradise? Because I sure do.

It’s been designed to look like the typical greek style villas you’d find on the island, so it feels like you’re actually in the Greek town, walking up and down the street hills and alleys – it’s really cleverly done.

5. Classic, classy and so oceanic, a beautiful mall like no other – Seenspace Hua Hin

We all love to do a tad of shopping when on vacay, and Santorini’s streets are lined with little boutique stores. Snap back to this reality and spend the afternoon at this stylish beachfront mall with cute cafes. The best part, this mall almost…kinda… right on the beach!

Done in an overall blue and white theme, wander around the boutiques, chill on beach cabanas and watch the waves.

6. Explore vineyards, taste delicious wine, learn the art of winemaking – Monsoon Valley Vineyard

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting beautiful Greece, particularly the islands, I’m sure you would have noticed the THOUSANDS of vineyards, just casually growing in the garden of every seaside property. And drinking (wine) is basically part of the Greek culture – or so it seems to me anyway! You’ll find it with every meal.

Photo Via Mayanne_chan

So visiting and experiencing the wine/vineyard culture here in Hua Hin is pretty much a given if you want a true Santorini experience.

45 minutes from downtown Hua Hin lay the lush, rolling hills of Monsoon Valley Vineyard. You’ll come for the wine and decide to stay for the picturesque views.

Photo Via Sunsun_b

Take a seat at Sala Wine Bar & Bistro and enjoy the sweet tastes of Rhone grapes that make up the Monsoon Valley label wine. Here they do a food & wine pairing – isn’t it just divine!

Photo Via Queeneco

You can also learn how they make their grapes in a tropical climate – which I totally love as you can smell the salty air while exploring the huge space. (Just the thought takes me straight back to my uncle’s father’s property on the beach just COVERED in vineyards!)

Photo Via Thatcrazyadventure, Faiphaiy

Tour packages are also available for purchase (but not mandatory). The premium tour will grant you 2 hours of admission at the vineyard, a premium tapas set, fresh grape juice, 3 wine tastings, and 3 snack pairings.

PS: The tour also includes a 15-minute elephant ride which we strongly recommend not taking up.

Editor’s note: We strongly advocate against elephant rides. Riding elephants can actually cause serious long term harm, as their spines are not made to support the weight of humans. Do try to avoid taking a ride as it is actually harmful to these magnificent animals.

7. There’s something so magical about being on the water on a boat – Day trips, Fishing trips and Sunset Cruises

Greece is made up of many small islands, hence the whole beachside, oceana feeling that we get when thinking of it as a country, right?

And of course when you’re on an island, you just have to take a cruise… Luckily for you, experience the wonders of being on the water as the sun sets, for a quarter of the price over here in Thailand.

Photo Via Huahincruises

There are many tour companies that you can book a seat with, and they generally consist of a day trip to the surrounding islands, including a stop over at Monkey Island. You can also take part in some fishing if you’re a fan, and there are many fish and squid in these areas. (Ever tried Grilled Squid in any Greek restaurant? It’s really quite yummy!)

A sunset trip with a traditional Thai dinner (on board of course) and a spot of night-fishing if you may.

Places to transport you and your tastebuds to the seaside

I don’t know about you, but whenever I’m visiting / vacaying near the ocean / beach / islands, I kind of expect there to be an abundance of fresh, local, seafood and my tastebuds kind of are waiting for it too…And after a day spent in the sun, it’s time to fill the bellies.

8. I mean, as if the name isn’t a given, plus it’s got absolutely stunning views — Big Fish Bar

Being a food-lover, I loved walking along the beachfront, picking and choosing between the beachside cafes to satisfy my hunger for the day. What I loved about each spot in Santorini, is the Mediterranean design that naturally added a sort of classiness to the restaurants.

For me, Big Fish has the same vibe. Tastefully decorated, airy and light and with the colours of the ocean naturally adding a sense of an oceanic feeling.

Photo Via Artem_ozh, _nadako

Now, what’s a dining experience without a view, am I right?

Big glass open windows face directly out to the ocean, so there’s a huge burst of lightness and blue! I also love their outside seating area, and their cabana loungers are exactly the type of outside seating you’d enjoy at Santorini beachfront places.

9. The Greeks and their wine – Hua Hin Hills Bistro & Wine Cellar

It can’t be mentioned enough. The Greeks really love to have a good time, and that includes drinking some very delicious wine.

This delightful bistro is actually part of Hua Hin Hills, but it’s located in town where you can enjoy all the delish wines from the vineyard itself!

Photo Via Beaulaswanepoel, Panitaen

What I love, love, love is the fact that they have a proper cellar in-house. It feels really authentic, and to me shows the quality, care and pride that they put into their craftsmanship (because making wine is really an art I’d say).

Photo Via Bewsupacha, Aprilcng

ALSO, I’m so into the wine barrels used as table stands, this is something you’d come across in any Greek taverna/local pub in Greece.

Photo Via Ricacia, Beaulaswanepoel

Food-wise, they have a great selection, although the menu is not large. Think fresh seafood pastas, pan-seared fish on spaghetti, anddd their desserts look scrumptious!

10. Lounging on cabanas is like, standard at any greek restaurant / bar / or cafe, and there’s no difference here – Azure Restaurant

*Mama Mia, lookatazisbeautifulplaacee!* (said in Greek accent)

Gorgeous, simply gorgeous! Class it up and enjoy breathtaking views, especially around sunset. Remember in Greece everything works a bit slowly, so they only have lunch around 4pm and dinner at 10/11pm.

Again, it’s cabana-lounger style, with the sound of the ocean’s waves, and is also a perfect spot for cocktails – it becomes super ambient at night too.

Now let’s talk business, the seafood. They’ve got… Live lobster, white prawn, tiger prawn, river prawn, rock lobster, squid, scallops, mussels, razor clams and a wide selection of a fresh catch of the day.

And I love this, at their ‘Fish Market’, you just grab a basket and take your pick from their live stations packed with fresh local seafood and organic greens. Then, have your choices weighed, and their chefs will create a dish prepared according to your desired cooking method! Plus complimentary stir-fried vegetable and your choices of sauces.

Now, not as fancy shmancy as the others, but with views like these and good food, this makes it a little gem. Plus it’s perched next to the waters, with rocks below you and beach flora and fauna… You might as well be on one of the Santorini’s hillside cafes.

What’s a beachy getaway without its beaches?

Santorini is an island, so it’s pretty much a given that there’s going to be beautiful beaches around and a lot of time spent in the sunshine! Although they differ in sands (you ain’t gonna find any pebbled sands in Thailand, instead we opt for soft whites) and oceans – we found the best beaches around Hua Hin perfect for swimming, working on that tan and in general enjoying that Vitamin D.

12. Gorgeous mountains and peaceful surroundings – Khao Takiab

Santorini is filled with winding hills and hillsides, and cliffs stretch out into views from here, there and everywhere. So, this beach in particular totally has that feeling with that giant mountain on the roadside, with the beach beside it.

There are some places built into the mountain too, which just adds to the Santorini-like feeling.

Photo Via Tearohaboy, Travel__ekb

It’s actually 10km out of Hua Hin near a fishing village suburb, and it’s perfect for some peace and serenity – as it’s a bit quieter here.

The beach is also pretty flat from the sand to it’s waves, which is the typical type of tide that Santorini is home to.

13. Take a little drive, do some exploring and head for this epic rocky beach – Khao Kalok

30km out of town, take a little drive and reach a gorgeous natural haven.

All of the rockery and beach, transport you to another place and it doesn’t feel like a Thai beach at all. When it’s at low-tide you can go out pretty far into the ocean thanks to the calm waters, just as if you were on the island.

16. Watch the sunrise, catch Bryde’s whales, and ride a boat! – Bang Tabun River Floating Fisherman’s Village (1.5 hours from Hua Hin)

Sometimes it truly does feel like life out in Greece is one of a happy fisherman’s; spending the entire day next to the seaside, eating seafood all.the.time and in abundance. It’s basically how the Greeks live, around food and having a good time.

When in Greece one of the popular things to do is go on a boat trip and explore what’s around you, as you pass the cutest fishing boats in bright colours of red, blue, yellow and green.

For this one they say sunrise is a real treat – if you can make it up that early! Catch an incomparable sunrise over the Bang Tabun River, and prepare to have your breath taken away.

18. Admire the natural beauty and wonder of this National Park and enjoy getting cultural —  Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park (1-hour drive from Hua Hin)

Overlooking Phetchaburi stands Phra Nakhon Khiri (Holy City Hill) Historical Park, known more commonly among locals as Khao Wang (Palace Hill).

Get lost exploring the various temples, pagodas, and buildings scattered throughout the hilltops.

20. Drinks with a breathtaking view of the city – White Lotus (Sky Bar)

Being on the 19th floor and all, this time revel in spectacular sunset views from way above at White Lotus..

From up above, you’ll see sweeping views of the stunning city below, and it even looks like it could be a Grecian city, with all the clusters of homes and the ocean in front/next to it – albeit this is the Thai rendition offering its own charm and views.

21. What’s a beach day without ice-cream? – Skoop Beach Cafe

Truth be told, without fail, every time we were down at the beach, which was literally every day – 3 weeks in Greece and I was the colour of gold, ah… – anyway, we would always get an ice-cream. It’s so hot that the body just craves something cold! (Plus I’m a kid at heart with a crazy sweet tooth.)

22. Cafe for a frappe – Tree House Cafe, Drip Coffee

Every day in Greece is started the same way, first and foremost before anything, a frappe from your local cafe. Anyway, this is serious business and I slowly grew into the habit myself (when returning home all I craved was those iced coffees!).

Tree House is the cutest one-stop coffee shop on the go, and it’s bar counter (you find these all across Europe, from Italy to Hungary), is built among a tropic of reworked walls and greens. It’s literally perfect for a quick iced coffee before really starting your day.

I’m a coffee snob, and nothing displeases me more than a weak coffee that tastes basically like milk. So I had to include Drip Coffee, who just happen to do a divine drip coffee, using freshly roasted beans from all great coffee growing countries, for example, Costa Rica and Kenya.

The interiors are homely but modern, eclectic but urban. It’s got a wonderful ambiance inside that makes you want to go back to make it a regular morning coffee-stop.

[PERMANENTLY CLOSED] 23. Feel good and kickback at one of the most retro villages – Plearnwan, Hua Hin

Plearnwan loosely translates to Play/Learn Yesterday. “Plearn” is a fun play on words between play and learn.

While “wan” translates to yesterday in Thai. This vintage village fully encompasses “the good old times” inspired by Thai Chinese neighbourhoods that once occupied Hua Hin and Bangkok.

I’m sure if Yiayia (Greek for grandmother) visited, she may just feel at home. I love it. In the late afternoon you’ll find all the oldies, and I say that endearingly, gather in town in the afternoon sun, visiting the bakery, a neighbour down the street, picking up their grandchildren from school or joining their pal for a game of chess in the sunshine.

At Plearnwan, it’s all about happiness and feeling good. As you walk through the wooden tunnel at the entrance of the street, you will feel as though you are walking through a time portal.

Unmistakable nostalgia will encompass you once you step through the tunnel and onto the street.

Spend an evening or an entire day browsing through shops or gorging yourself with incredible street eats! From sweet to savoury, from spicy to chilled, there is something to satisfy every appetite.

24. Pretend you’re a mermaid and go swimming with the fishes – Snorkelling Cruise

Whenever I’m visiting an island, I love to try as many water activities as possible, getting to know what each ocean holds around the world.

The waters in Greece are that beautiful emerald turquoise blue, and the islands around Hua Hin remind me of it – so naturally, we’re going to want to do a tad bit of snorkelling.

Photo Via Klook

It’s the same story in Santorini, when you go snorkelling (or diving), you usually need to book through a tour company who take you out on your excursion yonder, into the deep blues and secret spots.

Enjoy snorkelling among a range of biodiverse corals and fish that swim the waters of the eastern gulf of Thailand, work on your tan on a pristine white beach (and lunch is included on the cruise).

What’s a holiday in Santorini like? Utter relaxation

I keep going back to it, but it’s so true, when you’re on holiday, you really want to feel like you’re on holiday, and that includes pampering yourself.

25. How could you not feel relaxed in a place as regal as this—  The Barai

Girllll, this place is beautiful, and that’s no lie. It’s designed to replicate an Ashram, and the structure and style is really giving me all sorts of Meditterian, Middle-Eastern vibes and the thickness of the walls here also lend themselves to that Grecian design.

If after all that you’re still not convinced as to why Hua Hin is a fantastic choice to experience a little piece of Santorini vibes, without having to fly all the way there – well then I might suggest you book yourself on the next flight to Santorini itself.

For now though, there’s plenty gorgeous white-washed, blue highlights and oceanic feelings in Hua Hin to keep you content enough with your Santorini dream… for now.
