From black and white, to 3D animation – cartoons through the ages have developed and changed drastically. But one thing’s for sure, our love for them has not!
Whether it’s nostalgia, or simply not being able to let go, as adults there’s still that soft spot for animated characters. And I think that’s where our joy in our kids’ love for the cartoonish faces, resonates with us still.
Now we all know the attention span of a five year old is not always that long, so after an hour or so of shopping – there’s nothing more a child wants to do than not be there.
So to ease both parents and child’s troubles, we’ve put together a list of 16 cafes in Bangkok that are actually cartoon themed.
NOW think of your 5 year old’s face when they step into a teddy-bear factory! Or how about watching a samurai ROBOT serve you your food! Excited yet? You should be!
Is that no complaints I hear? Ahhh, just the way I like it.

1. (Now closed) Studio Ghibli fanatics, try not let your heart stop! – May’s Garden House Restaurant
What, what, WHAT?! (Heart stops)
This is dedicated solely to the fans of the beloved giant forest spirit from the anime classic, My Neighbour Totoro.
It’s actually the first officially themed restaurant licensed by Studio Ghibli.
Now, you may be thinking, why Thailand and not Japan? Well, here’s the thing – and also a bit of fate if you ask me – the idea of the place is inspired by a women that Toshio Suzuki met in Nakhon Ratchasima province here in Thailand, who owned a roadside stall.
She happened to be named May (If you don’t know your stuff, Mei is one of the two sisters in the film who befriend Totoro in the forest).
He tried her chicken wings – which feature on this menu – and the enlightened moment happened; he came up with the concept of May’s Garden House. And everyone says these wings are delicious!
The menu features traditional Thai food and Ghibli’s legacy is truly celebrated.
Totoro and the Catbus are the main characters of many desserts as well as the makkuro kurosuke (the tiny black sprites in many Ghibli movies). How adorable!
2. There is only one truth — Detective Conan Cafe
We’ve loved reading about him for 20 years, and finally, probably the most famous Japanese (high-school) detective, has come to life!
Think full on with the decor, and snap away with life-sized cutouts of Shinichi, ahem, I mean, Conan and friends!
All of their foods are of course, character themed and I love the OTTness (read: Over The Top) about the place.
Like, how about a Detective Conan Hot Latte (with this amazing printed foam on top, I’m still asking how) or Labyrinth Curly Fries.
The desserts look delicious too! The Detective Conan’s Special Choux Cream Party Plate had me with all sorts of macarons, choux pastries and souffle. Or the Zero the Enforcer with a zero sugar pancake!
If you loved reading this series, that’s now a tv show plus there’s been a movie…
Phew, you’ll really love relating to all the titles and little features of each dish, and reminiscening hard-core at the same time too.
3. Let’s play dress up – Maidreamin
Without sounding like a cliche, Japan really is the land of fads, where the craziest trends or cultural movements pop up like hot cakes.
This next place is no different, except of course, the location. It’s based on the Japanese Maid cafes, where girls dress up like french maids, everything is uber girly and cartoon-like from the foody soft toys to the pictured frames lining the walls.
Oh yeah, and the food too, rearranged into hearts and teddy-bears.
Sweeten the already bubbly mood with their sundaes, all differently shaped scoops of ice-cream + toppings to go to resemble animals. I’m talking puppies to chickens and cats, and even a turtle!
They even have little pinafores, with pink oversized bows for the little ones, if your girls want to play dress up – cuteness overload!
4. Major childhood flashbacks! — Moomin Cafe
This was a serious flashback to my childhood… And kids too just seem to fall in love with the whimsical Moomin family that all lived happily ever after in Moominvalley.
It’s instantly recognisable with those big red, white and blue doors, so come on in.
Continuing from it’s Scandinavian roots, there’s lots of small details that give a real authenticity to the place.
There’s a really warm and cosy feeling here, and I’m sure it’s from the help of all the giant soft toy characters at every table and corner – who doesn’t love a good cuddle?
If you want to remember this childhood memory forever, or pass it onto your kids – they’ve also got a little souvenir shop selling all sorts of cute Moomin toys, books and teddies.
5. The next best thing to Santa’s factory – Villa De Bear
Let’s start off with this, it’s made to resemble an actual teddy bear factory – can you get any cuter than that? I don’t think so and if I were a child again, I think I’d be so intrigued.
It’s been cleverly planned out so that the seating design looks like a conveyor belt (for all the teddies being made – duh!)
Take a look at the ceiling to see all sorts of nuts & bolts and mechanics. It’s like a fantasy world made of wood, steel, concrete and brick elements, and there’s even giant coloured rolls of wool lining the ceilings! Kids would be fascinated!
There’s also a buffet every day, but they do separate dishes too. If you’re ordering a la carte, be prepared for some seafood in abundance.
Their meat cuts are super tasty and I’d definitely say go for the Australian Lamb Chops with pepper sauce and fries. Seafoodies – their Deep Fried fish is also unreal.
One thing about me, I go bonkers for passion fruit anything. Try their Sammy Passion Mousse – a bear filled with delicious, soft passion Mousse, with hints of vanilla, filled with a fruit jelly centre!
(Now closed) 6. PINK, PINK UNICORNS, GLITTER, SPARKLES – Pixie Dust Café
I don’t know about you, but as a child I spent hours in my grandmother’s rose garden, searching for the little fairies that I knew existed. I never found any but when I came across this cafe, I was immediately transported back to my childhood dreams.
I’m convinced this is Tinkerbell’s favourite cafe, it just has to be.
It feels like the inside of a potion room (but all pink) of a forest folk, with little enchanted ‘potions’ and bottles of glitter everywhere. Why was this place not around when I was young??!!
Of course everything is done in pinks and rainbows, and that includes all the yummy cakes, ice-creams and juices – think burnt orange juice, mmm!
But actually, here’s the thing, I still believe in fairies, don’t you?
[CLOSED] 7. A worldwide phenomenon transformed into cakes – Hello Kitty House Bangkok
Now you know if there’s a Hello Kitty house opening up in like, Bangkok it’s bound to be a perrrrfect dream down to the last detail, and it’s exactly as expected.
Pretend you’re walking into having (playing) afternoon tea in an old London hotel. There’s soft pink pastels everywhere, obviously, but I love all the old-school feel interiors. It’s like cute-vintage Japanese / English glam – if that’s even a thing.
Gigantic Hello Kitty figurines everywhere, a really epic stained glass Hello Kitty ceiling top, a hot pastel pink VW Buggy and the most incredible Hello Kitty shop! \
They do savoury but I would suggest checking out their bakery, glitter doughnuts, rainbow cakes and pastel purple cupcakes.
Their desserts are also really cool – order their DIY Strawberry Tiramisu or Salted Caramel Carnival Bingsu .
Moms, did we mention there’s a Hello Kitty Spa here too? Perfect, right?
8. It’s just too cute not to go inside – B.Duck Cafe
I’m still trying to figure out what it was about this cafe that made it so darned adorable! Maybe it’s those happy bath time memories, or maybe you just love ducks? Maybe it’s the millions of rubber duckies everywhere?
Whatever the case, it’s a delightfully bright, warm and happy cafe and it’s yellow beams of sunshine are enough to lift anyone’s smile – grumpy toddler anyone?
They’re known for their good coffee and they’ve got a solid delight of treats.
Look for pops of colour – in case the yellow overload becomes too much in their food – in tons of colourful macarons and ice-cream flavours.
9. Are you telling me that there’s a place where I can see unicorns? – Unicorn Café at Sathorn
If it came to really making your dreams come true, I’d say this is a pretty good substitute for what your fairy godmother cannot grant you.
You absolutely have to taste their cotton candy frappe – a star shaped glass big enough for four people, and it even comes with a giant cotton candy.
From the floors to the walls and its unicorns, get ready for a pink extravaganza
The difference here compared to every other Unicorn cafe across Asia, or the world for that matter – is that the food here is not too bad. A lot of times it’s just about the unicorns / pretending to be like one.
Before you know it, your kids will think they’ve seen a leprechaun next.
10. Oh peanuts! – Charlie Brown Cafe
The world’s most “lovable-loser” oh my dear boy, Charlie Brown. Another favourite childhood classic and one of the first cartoon characters from the comics, that we all hold dear to our hearts.
The place celebrates the Peanuts gang and have a snap with everyone’s favourite – Snoopy!! Or you can eat him in rice form!
You have to try one of their ice cream sandwiches! The kids will just love them too,can you imagine eating a Snoopy sandwich?
Again another place for desserts! And they’re naturally, all named to theme. Some have even been animated in dessert form – white chocolate bone anyone? Don’t forget to wash it all down with a soda!
Illustrations from the comic line the walls, so if you’re a super fan you’ll be in your element.
11. Welcome to a world of imagination – PLAY CAFE เพลย์ คาเฟ่
As a kid, what was better than visiting the toy store? Let’s be real, nothing!
That excitement of seeing all the colourful and animated faces, favourite tv and movie characters, dolls, trolls, train stations and favourite cartoons!
Now here they’ve tweaked it slightly to fit both parents and their children’s desires. Imagine a place that looks like a toy-store and is also a restaurant!
Refuel on some tasty chicken wings or refreshen with a Mocha Cool that’s got a good caffeine kick to it – whilst your kids spend their time wandering the rows of toys that are for sale too.
Plus there’s cute little figurines everywhere of cartoon characters through the ages. So you’ll be waiting in anticipation to see who’s just hanging off your rim.
12. The most famous monkey around – Paul Frank Cafe
Even if you don’t know his name, I’m sure you’ll instantly recognise the animated face of Julius the monkey – covering thousands of clothing, accessories and now, food!
The brand is about creativity, being on-trend and cool – and the restaurant oozes this too in it’s wonderful animated fashion.
The food is funky, just like the Paul Frank brand, and there’s a bit of theatre on each plate – I’m talking liquid nitrogen here. Try the Choco Mint Brownie, or insert your own flavours into your desserts with different syringes filled with flavoured liquids.
Take a cute photo with their life-sized Chef Julius ,or snap away and cuddle the many soft toy, life-sized monkeys.
Colour pops everywhere from the framed characters all over walls to their galaxy cupcakes.
13. The future is now, yelp! – Hajime Robot Restaurant
This is actually a Yakiniku restaurant, a common type of eatery across Asia where there’s a mini barbeque in the middle of each table.
But do you want to know what makes this one so special? Your food is brought to you by…a samurai robot!!
That’s right folks, a robotic serving restaurant – and you thought you were going to have to wait till the year 2049
The world is fascinated and it’s not hard to see why. You place your order through a touch screen and 5 to 15 minutes later, your robot will then bring it to your table! (There’s a track that runs around the u-shaped seating, letting the robots come and go as they please.)
If you’re lucky enough, and they’re not busy serving a ton of guests – the two samurais may even break down into a lady Gaga dance routine for you! What a treat.
There’s a variety of different food sets to choose from (that are all you can eat!), and the Shabu and BBQ sets include several Sushi dishes – so that’s all.you.can.eat SUSHI.

Website (Now closed) 14. Let’s go on a teddy-bear’s picnic – Hungry Bear Pancake
Who loves honey? Bears love honey! What goes best with honey…pancakes!! And that’s exactly the idea they’re playing with here.
Their concept is really cute and simple, and makes you feel like you should be part of Winnie the Pooh’s gang with teddy bears scattered everywhere!
Pancakes are served with mini honey jars and the spoons represent a beehive. Some pancakes (we recommend the chocolate) are even bear shaped! All are served in mini boxes, like a picnic basket I guess.
They’re really reasonably priced for such a cutesy type cafe, and a tray of 5 pancakes only costs 99 Baht. Wash it all down with a delicious cup of apple tea! Just wonderful!
15. Boys and their toys – Toy Café
Transformers, warriors, and Japanese fighters. Have we caught your attention yet?
Boys around the world go absolutely bonkers for robots – I mean, did we not see how the Transformer idea/trend just BOOMED?
Finally something for the lads, imagine stepping into a room filled with the most epic Japanese warrior robots!
I’m talking walls lined with glass cases! You not only get to gag over them, but they’re for sale too! You can buy packs from 190 Baht to 2000 Baht.
It’s not only toys in this joint, they’ve got a selection of food from savoury to dessert. Their sticky BBQ chicken is mouthwatering, as well as your classic fried rice served with a crunchy spiced chicken.
They’ve got all classic sweet Thai favourite desserts from bingsu to toasted milk tea bread with ice-cream and doughnuts!
Did you ever think there’d come a day when kids would be so preoccupied whilst waiting for their food? Nope? We didn’t either!
But luckily for all, that day has finally arrived. Let us know how it went by commenting below!
