If you’re anything like me and love a good wintery mountain vacation….
AND, you’re looking for an inexpensive destination…..
Consider Khao Kho. A 5D4N family itinerary to Khao Kho & Bangkok alone will already only cost you USD $129.50 / SGD $179 per person excluding flights. Isn’t that crazy?
The stays here at Khao Kho aren’t too expensive too, with the most affordable option being from USD $31.
A 5.5-hour drive from Bangkok to Khao Kho will transport you to this magical town above the clouds. Due to the cooler temperature, the scenery is vastly different from the Thailand you are used to.
One of the famous views we can’t forget? The sea of rolling clouds – just like in a Studio Ghibli film!
1. The cutest ‘jamroll’ rooms overlooking the mountains – Phusandao Resort
Just imagine sitting on a wide wooden platform on cushy beanbag chairs relaxing while admiring the verdant valley views. This is just one of the lovely experiences you’ll get at Phusandao Resort.

The second dreamy experience? Staying in one of the Jam Roll rooms. A cute name for the cabins comfortably decorated in all you’ll need, that looks just like one of those Swiss Rolls.
With its quaint arched ceilings, and a door opening up to your veranda looking out to views of the mountains… You’ll have quite the amazing stay that’s instagrammable too!

There’s a restaurant onsite, and room service for when you get hungry, so there’s no need to leave if you don’t feel like moving about for the day.

In addition, It’s quite an interesting choice of stay with its juxtaposition of elegant charm and small traditional farm-like touches like thatched roof skirting around the buildings.
PS: There’s a bar, restaurant and free breakfast too! Feel free to indulge in the alcoholic beverage of your choice as you take in those views.

3. Your own little house in the mountains – Kho Kirin Resort
Wake up to the rolling hills, garden of greens and picturesque flower beds.
What’s so perfect about this place is the size of where you’ll be calling home for the next few days.

Here you won’t find any rooms or even a bungalow, each unit is a cottage / villa style house – and some even have space to sleep eight people. They’ve even got a family…TREEHOUSE!
Photo Via Flamecorrin, Dulyavit.phongpiladlux
Structural, simple and squared, each unit really feels like it’s own little space; like you’re living in your own garden cottage for awhile. A beautiful wooden patio is attached to each place, so morning coffee, in your PJ’s, with the rising sun, view of the sea of clouds, and fresh air are essential.
Photo Via Alizeae, Showgoone
The interiors are basic, but that’s all you really need in the mountains anyway.

Don’t forget to bring your bubbles. For those that love a good soak on chillier evenings some units have bathtubs, now if you’re like me, that’s always a game-changer,
4. Have a BBQ at this Industrial-inspired resort – Bann Ton Kho Resort and Restaurant
It’s picturesque and a quaint town-like resort, what’s not to love?!
Stay in one of their industrial-style bungalows, the raw cement walls, hanging bulbs and crisp lines might inspire your future home decor.

The first thing you’ll think of when you step into your stay here, is that it’s simple classic luxury with minimal fittings and little Thai touches.
The Swiss-style chalets are spacious and perched on the mountainside, and you’ll get a really nice terrace to admire the views from. If you have the budget to splash a few dollars more per night, get the Panorama Executive Room which has a nicer terrace and living area.

If you’re looking for some wintery mountain romance, you might be tickled to know that some of the chalets come with actual fireplaces to help keep the rooms heated when it gets really cold at night!

PS: English breakfasts are served – if you’d love a good breakfast to accompany the crazy views. 🙂
9. Imagine staying in a glass box in the mountains! – The Glass Box Khao Kho
If there ever was a good setting for a storybook, this might just be it.
Looking more like one of those pop up displays, this hotel is only known to local Thais, is pretty new and a surprisingly trendy find – especially up in the isolated mountains.
Photo Via Danrry_ice, Bumephing
The apartment/loft-style stays are romantic with full length windows (well, it is a ‘glass box’) that open up to those views. All you’ll need to do is pull the curtains open to take it all in.

Clean, spacious and extremely zen, this is one of the mountain escapes I feel particularly called to. (It’s known to be a romantic place to the locals too!)

10. The CingJing Taiwan homestay experience… in Thailand! – Baan Sook Aroon Khao Kho
With only 6 rooms available, this is a small and homely stay (almost like a homestay!) that quirky and colourful all on its own.
From your room, you’ll get to sip on tea or coffee while looking out of the window through to the rolling valleys below.
Want to see the sea of clouds? No problem, simply wake up bright and early (best between 6-7am) to catch the sunrise and the morning mist.
It’s a humble abode that offers great bang for your buck, and travellers who’ve stayed there have adored the stay.
Special Mention #1: Here’s how to glamp in the clouds, a secret only locals know! – Lake Hill Khao Kho
Stay in a teepee, surrounded by foliage with a view over the clouds – this is glamping in the clouds. There are a few options, but we’ve got our eye on the White Dome Tent.

It’s secluded enough for comfort but not so that you’re isolated from food or human interaction.

You can also get some furry time with the dogs at The Pug Coffee. Their two residents seem to be a French Bulldog and a Pug, so be on a lookout for the two.

Why is this a special mention? This is the first time we’ve found an ‘exotic’ stay like this in Thailand! Who’d have thought you’d be able to find digs inspired by the traditional Mongolian Yurts here.
If you’re looking for a different stay experience (maybe even for the cool photos?) – you could consider this!

Special Mention #3: Great countryside holiday home for big families – Baan Ing Phu Khao Kho
We included this in the list for several reasons.
#1: It’s great value for money at this price point for a 3-bedroom house that sleeps up to 7! (That’s $16 per person?!)
#2: It really feels like your very own countryside holiday home. Isn’t that just the dream?
#3: It’s really serene with a beautiful meadow of flowers. We lurrrve.
