Overview (8 Types of Medical Care)

Skin Centre & Dermatology
Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery
This includes medical institutions that provide comprehensive medical services, including (but not limited to) Surgical, ENT and Pediatrics.
1. Experience world-class medical care – Bangkok Hospital
Most foreigners may recognise Bumrungrad Hospital more than Bangkok Hospital, but honestly, Bangkok Hospital is just as good (or even better) than the former.
Personally speaking, Bangkok Hospital provides very good medical service and is becoming more international. In fact, they have doctors that are highly fluent in English, Chinese and more – so don’t worry if your Thai language skills are nonexistent.
The doctors here are highly knowledgeable in their field, while the hospital itself offers comprehensive medical services, from Emergency to ENT. So if anything does happen to you (or you’re unsure which department you should head to), you can be assured that the right professionals will attend to you in any situation.
2. Say goodbye to ouchies – Samitivej
Another hospital that’s renowned for its world-class medical care is Samitivej. Trusted for their professional medical staff and services, many locals actually come here when they’re in need of medical attention.
Special to Samitivej, they have their own Children’s Hospital to cater for all types of illnesses kids may face, including a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Infectious Disease Clinic and Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplantation Center.
Otherwise, similar to the other two hospitals listed in this section, they also offer a wide array of medical services for adults.
Note: This hospital has a few branches in Bangkok. Check out their website for the complete list of hospitals under Samitivej.
3. Who says all hospitals are expensive? – Phyathai Hospital
Short of cash / no medical insurance but still want high-quality medical care? Then head straight to Phyathai Hospital. It’s not as expensive as the other two hospitals, making it one of the favoured choices for middle-class Thais.
Don’t get me wrong, although it’s more affordable, it doesn’t mean the medical attention you receive here won’t be as good as the others. The staff here are extremely professional, and in fact, I’ve had friends and family friends admitted to this hospital. I’ve even had my check-up here, and it was all done in English!
Note: This hospital has a few branches in Bangkok, such as Phyathai 1 Hospital, Phyathai 2 Hospital, etc.
4. Meet Thailand’s oldest and largest hospital – Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun
Another hospital you can consider going to is the private branch of Siriraj Hospital, Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun. Being the oldest, as well as largest hospital in the city, it has a reputable standing among locals, who still choose to frequent here because of its known reputation.
However, it’s highly unrecommended for travellers to visit the public hospital (Siriraj Hospital) because of their very long waiting time. As such, we suggest travellers visit Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun instead, where you can expect shorter queues and the same top medical services.
Just like other hospitals in this category, it offers a wide variety of medical services from Orthopedic and ENT, to Cancer and Surgery.
Fun fact: Siriraj Hospital is frequented by the Thai Royal Family (the late King was previously admitted here). It’s also under Mahidol University, aka Thailand’s best university for medicine.
Get a licensed masseuse or masseur to relieve your muscle pains and knots.
13. Get a specialist to relieve your muscle pains – Health Land
Whenever mine or my dad’s back or shoulders ache, we’ll head straight to Health Land. What I love about this place is that they’ve got licensed masseuse and masseur that knows exactly how to untie your muscle knots and relieve the pain. You can also choose whether you want a male or female specialist.
To start it off, they’ll ask you to change your shoes into slippers before you’re taken to an enclosed area (each space is cordoned off with a floor-to-ceiling curtain). They’ll then ask you to change your clothes to clean clothes (like the ones they give when you’re taking an X-Ray). After your treatment, they’ll put hot towels on the treated part of your body before you’re given hot tea (this part feels amaaazingggg!).
This includes health facilities that provide comprehensive Dental services, including scaling and dental surgery.
7. Smile confidently once again – Thantakit International Dental Center
Dental problems? You’ll want to check out this Dental Center. As soon as you enter, you’ll be so stunned by the clean and spacious look of the place that you’ll think you’re in a general hospital!
For one, it’s got several floors, all dedicated to dental care. And with so many rooms for different specialties, you’ll be sure to get the right treatment needed to get your teeth problems fixed once and for all.
Each room is also fitted with the latest dental equipment, ensuring that you’re only treated by highly certified dentists using the best tools.
8. Are my teeth all fixed? That fast?! – Asavanant Dental Clinic
The dentists and surgeons here are excellent. In fact, my friend told me that his tooth surgery went by so fast, he thought the surgeon was still prepping for the operation. And no pain was felt throughout the process (with only minimal bleeding). How awesome is that!
Asavanant Dental Clinic only uses state-of-the-art dental equipment, so you can be rest assured in receiving only the best treatment.
They also put cleanliness as a priority; case in point, the surgical floor. Here, patients are obliged to change into surgical scrubs before they enter the operating room.
9. Trust a hospital to maintain your oral hygiene (and appearance) – Mission Hospital
If there’s one place you can always rely on for dental work, it’s this hospital. And at Mission Hospital, you’re guaranteed great dental work for all teeth problems. In fact, this is where my dad goes when he needs to see the dentist. And so far, he’s always felt highly satisfied with the results.
Not only are you able to get your bi-annual dental check-ups done here, but you can also get other, more serious dental works such as implants done too. So don’t be too shocked if you see both Thais and foreigners frequenting the hospital’s Dentistry department.
Skin Centre & Dermatology
This includes treatments for skin problems or cosmetic issues (aesthetic-wise).
10. Want beautiful skin? – Bumrungrad International Hospital
Let’s be honest. Who’s never had acne problems before? I bet many of you have, especially when you’re in your teens or 20s. When this happens, the first thing you should do is go see a doctor and get it treated right.
At Bumrungrad Hospital’s Dermatology (Skin) Center, you can consult with highly skilled dermatologists for whatever skin problems you have, whether it’s minor issues like acne or more serious ones like skin allergies.
Best of all, the doctors here speak English. So don’t worry about communication issues.
PS: Other than Bumrungrad Hospital, other hospitals under the General Medicine category also provide dermatological care.
Treat your eye issues from minor eye problems to major ones like cataract surgery and LASIK.
11. Restore your eyes to full health – Rutnin Eye Hospital
If there’s a place I can put full trust in caring for my eyes, it’s Rutnin Eye Hospital, Thailand’s most renowned eye hospital.
The doctors here are very thorough in checking your eye condition, and the facilities this hospital have are state-of-the-art. In fact, they’ll make you go through a complete health and eye check up before you can finally see an eye doctor! So don’t be shocked if you find many international and local patients coming to this hospital.
Note: Spare a few hours if you’re planning to visit Rutnin Eye Hospital because the queue and processing time can be quite long.

12. Say goodbye to glasses – TRSC International LASIK Center
Wearing glasses can be inconvenient, especially if you have an active lifestyle or easily misplace things (prescribed glasses are expensive!). So why not get rid of them once and for all (or improve your vision by leaps) with a LASIK surgery?
This place only handles LASIK surgery cases, so you can be assured that they’ll take good care of your eye and improve your eyesight.
The best part about this place is that the doctors clearly give you the pros and cons of the surgery straightforwardly. You’ll know exactly what results you can expect and the complications you’ll face so you can make a completely informed decision. Only when you’re 100% sure about your decision will the doctors let you go with the LASIK surgery.
This includes hospitals that practice Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
5. The TCM doctors here speak Chinese & Thai! – Hua Chiew Hospital
If you speak these two languages AND are searching for a hospital that provides TCM services, then look no further than Hua Chiew Hospital. Although it offers various medical services (it’s a general hospital too), they’re actually highly respected in the country for their TCM services.
In the TCM department itself, they have mainland Chinese doctors well-versed in Thai and Chinese, as well as licensed Acupuncturists. Based on your condition, the doctors here will prescribe you the correct medication to relieve your problem.
Note: Please request for an interpreter at the reception if you’re not proficient in Thai or Chinese.
6. Cure your illnesses the traditional way – St Louis Hospital
Similar to Hua Chiew Hospital, St Louis also operates a TCM centre with qualified Chinese or Chinese-trained doctors. As such, you can request for Chinese herbal medicine or acupuncture treatments.
The TCM clinic is spacious and clean too, so you won’t need to worry about sanitary issues or feeling uncomfortable during the treatment.
St Louis Hospital is more English-friendly than Hua Chiew Hospital too, so no need to stress if you’re not proficient in Thai and Chinese. (But if you’re worried about possible miscommunication, please request for an English-proficient Doctor at the reception.)
Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery
Cosmetic procedures or plastic surgeries such as lasers, nose and boob jobs, and transgender surgeries too.
14. I like what I like – Yanhee International Hospital
The only person that can judge you is yourself. So if you can feel more confident and beautiful with a cosmetic procedure or plastic surgery, then there’s no problem with that as long as you have consent (for underaged people) and are fully aware of all the risks.
If you’d like to do it in Bangkok (After Korea, Thailand is famous for its plastic surgery), come over to Yanhee International Hospital. Here, you can get everything from wart removals to nose and breast jobs.
Worried about language issues? This hospital has an extensive foreigner service department so you’ll meet medical professionals proficient in English.
Fun fact: This hospital is also famous for transgender surgery.
Get professional help to restore your hair’s health to its original condition.
15. Worried about thinning hair? – DHT Hair Clinic
With today’s technology, nothing is impossible – including reversing baldness. If you’re experiencing hair loss, whether it’s due to hereditary or the after-effects of a medical procedure (e.g. chemotherapy), resolve this problem as soon as possible by visiting a hair specialist.
At DHT Hair Clinic, you can get hair restored via a hair transplant procedure. You can also grow hair at other parts of your body, such as to grow a beard, fill in your eyebrow, have chest hair and more. Whatever the reason is, as long as it’s related to hair, most chances are you can get it done here.
PS: Other than DHT Hair Clinic, Bumrungrad Hospital, Yanhee Hospital as well as other hospitals under the General Medicine category also has a Hair Centre.
