When you hear your friends say they are travelling to Bangkok, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

We’re sure affordable shopping, cheap massages, delicious street food and cute cafes all come tumbling onto the edge of your tongue as you rave about Bangkok’s vibrant city culture. And as girls, the most important thing on our to-do list (that gets our boyfriends/ husbands/ guy friends shuddering in horror) is of course affordable and good shopping!

While it’s great to have your regular fast and cheap fashion shopping at Chatuchak, Pratunam or Platinum Mall, have you ever gotten bored of the common styles and mass-produced quality from these crowded places?

Have you ever thought if Bangkok’s fashion could be more unique and of better quality, and you wouldn’t mind if it’s slightly pricier?

We were asking ourselves these questions when we embarked on a quest in Bangkok – to find interesting mid-range designer clothes that are well-manufactured, with good quality and unique designs that you pretty much can’t get anywhere else! And yes, after a lot of digging and sifting through stuff that’s too cheap or too expensive, we’ve found hidden gems that we couldn’t help but share with you!

So come, you’ll impress your colleagues the next time you return from Bangkok (we’re sure they won’t believe your amazing loot is from there)!

A. Siam Centre

As an upscale shopping mall, Siam Centre is where you can find plenty of brand name stores and styles. Situated near Siam BTS station, this spacious mall offers a modern and unique concept of interconnected stores. Pricewise, it’s pegged at a higher range but comes with amazing quality.

Opened after refurbishment in 2013, Siam Centre offers 3 floors of full shopping experience. As you move from the first (ground) and second floor where most international store brands are, you’ll land nicely on third floor where the local brands are. Get ready to meet our pick of these  6 local stores!

1. Get fashionably smart with unique wearable art – Pedz

We admit, we were totally judging a shop by its shopfront, especially when it came to Pedz. How could we resist walking into this artistic nest?

Pedz is the definition of contemporary chic that’s artistic, smart and fun, and this is clearly reflected in the effort taken to create a shopfront that simply beckons curious shoppers to enter.

Its artist and founder, Anek Jindarat, has been making waves in numerous fashion scenes in Asia since 2003. We aren’t surprised, given the ingenuity of the designs.

The mastery of Pedz’ unisex designs lies in its avant-garde style, crafted using original freehand painting that results in these unique patterns you see. Aren’t they simply timeless essentials for your wardrobe?

2. Step into pop-wonderland – Flynow III by Flynow

Neon lights, bold designs, Cinderella’s castle and fluffy creatures from Alice’s wonderland – these are the elements that will greet you when you enter the shop in Siam Centre.

Locally produced and internationally loved, Flynow III started from a small shop with its mother brand, Flynow. It now has a wide global recognition, all thanks to its vivid and one-of-a-kind fashion creations.

With Flynow III, you can expect a playful mix of futuristic, rebellious and pop-cultural elements that are carefully embodied in bold fashion pieces.

3. Fairies in a secret garden – Garden Flynow III

The sister brand of Flynow, Garden Flynow III is a womenswear inspired by a garden theme, with earthy hues and butterfly prints.

You won’t be able to miss this bright yellow store that displays all the the cutest and trendiest bags in the most playful patterns.

From mini slings, cool backpacks to totes of all sizes, these adorable bags from Kloset Etcetera boast of busy and attractive designs in girly colors from pastel pink to navy blue.

5. Catching raindrops with a burst of rainbow – La Jewelry

Raindrops fell and I caught them in a little glass vial. Now I wear them round my neck.

B. Siam Square

Located just opposite Siam Centre, Siam Square is a shopping district divided into Soi (street) 1 to 6 and they are full of small shops and even tiny stalls nestled in hidden lanes.

This area connects to many other popular malls and districts nearby, including Siam Discovery Centre, Siam Paragon, Ratchaprasong shopping district and Sukhumvit Road. It almost reminds us of the famous Ewha Shopping Street in South Korea but on a smaller scale.

Our best advice is to spare at least a full day to give yourself the proper Siam Square shopping experience. But if you’re in a rush, make sure you check out these 4 local brands:

7. A wardrobe out of a dreamy fairytale – Paletanique

Do you love dream catchers and roses in romantic white, pink-grey and purple-grey hues?

Paletanique’s collection is a parade of whimsical fantasy in dream catcher style, mostly on delicate fabric such as see-through organdy or Spanish silk.

Their choice of pale colors also makes the brand a perfect wardrobe for those who love a soft feminine flair in their everyday look.

It’s difficult to miss Origano’s fairytale-girly storefront with a romantic floral arc and charming bed of roses.

If these appeal to the feminine side of you, you can be sure their collection will.

Origano offers a good mix of girly and princessy dresses (sewn with lace and sequins), colorful trendy pieces, and black lace one-pieces for more mature ladies.

Their designs come in limited pieces, so you can be assured that the chances of you wearing the same thing as someone else in the streets are pretty slim!

10. Quirky vintage that never goes out of style – Today Tomorrow Forever (TTF)

We stumbled upon this little pop-up stall when navigating through one of those tiny lanes in Siam Square. Its quirky items caught our attention immediately, and imagine our delight when we realised that the designer herself was manning the stall that day.

TTF’s vintage style isn’t all about frumpy retro dresses or grandma-style clothing, but super cool printed T-shirts in washed-out hues, classic ripped jeans, lace one-pieces, jumpers and even Chinese-inspired embroidered shoes.

Their collection also includes quirky beaded accessories (some even with images of the Virgin Mary) to a few modern pieces of timeless beauty that will always look good today, tomorrow and forever.

C. Terminal 21

This themed shopping mall is located at Sukhumvit Road, near the Asoke intersection. With a total of 9 floors, each floor is inspired by famous cities worldwide, such as Rome on the Ground Floor, Tokyo on the 1st Floor, London on the 2nd floor, and Istanbul on the 3rd floor.

Walking around in Terminal 21 is sure to be a treat itself with its sculptures and fitting decorations, all the way to the toilet area!

Some stores allow bargains while others come with fixed prices. You can find an extensive mix of collections here, from very unique personal brands to common ones you can find in other malls such as Union Mall (a popular mall frequented by the Thais with super affordable prices).

We recommend you to check out Union Mall first to avoid buying overpriced items at Terminal 21 that can be much cheaper elsewhere. But if you haven’t got time, you can be assured that these 4 local brands are authentic and you are getting your money’s worth!

11. Add something sweet to your modern princess style – K9

Here’s where you can dress like a princess.

Located in the Tokyo Zone, K9 is a store dedicated to womenswear with a contemporary princess style. You can find modern dresses, sexy slip-on dresses, formal wear, flirty party gowns and even bridesmaid gowns.

Their signature style is minimalistic beauty with a touch of elegance and feminine boldness. And of course, not missing the huge bows and sweetheart bust line that defines every princessy dress!

12. Parisian chic meets Japanese sass – Lyn Around

If you combine the delicate splendor of French flair and Japanese pop culture quirkiness, you’ll get Lyn Around.

This revolutionary brand offers sophisticated clothing and accessories that are sweet and fun with a mix of vibrant colors, jolly prints and crisp details. You can find everything girly and trendy here, from lace to ruffled sleeves to off-shoulder dresses.

At Sara’s Wand, you can expect to find 100% fresh handmade soap, lotion, and bath products of great quality, made from natural basic ingredients such as tea, jojoba oil, coffee and more. As a result, their soap bars and other creations are deliciously aromatic and have excellent functions, from detox to moisturising.

We couldn’t resist their room mist, which comes in various floral scents such as jasmine, frangipani and cherry blossom. All of them were so delightful, we couldn’t choose!

14. A little cosmetics dollhouse of every girl’s fantasy – Beauty Cottage

This charming Victorian-themed cosmetics store entices you right at its doorstep with its sweet and girly packaging.

The colorful racks display rows of skincare, body care, hair products and other beauty products, prettily wrapped in boxes with floral prints and sweet hues. We were so fascinated with the elegantly packaged solid perfume, which costs less than 250 baht (USD 7).

There is also a dedicated make-up rack full of lipstick, eyeliner, eyeshadow and more. How can you resist?

1. Luxurious silk wear – Jim Thompson Factory Outlet

How can you leave Bangkok without bringing home some authentic luxury Thai silk?

Although Jim Thompson is definitely a high-end brand, it’s an iconic one that you shouldn’t miss if you love good quality fabric, especially silk.
